After a hard day’s work, all you want is to sink into your comfy couch and surf through TV or watch your favorite movie enjoying popcorn and an ice-cold drink on the side.  But did you know, your couch also is a breeding ground for bacteria, sweat-based fungus, molds, dust, dead hair and a lot more. Yup, it is true, you share your couch with things you wouldn’t want to be 5 inches close to. And yet you sit in the middle of it as to enjoy your favorite rom-com.

The idea of this blog is not to scare you or disgust you in any manner, but to share with you some quick and easy remedies to keep these unwanted couch-sharing pests at bay.

Here are simple cleaning hacks that would keep your couch sparkling, sanitized and dust-free.

Vacuum is your couch’s best friend

Vacuum your couch every day or at least once a week to keep dust, food crumbs, hair etc from settling in and going deeper.

Read the fabric instruction code carefully

Before using these hacks its essential to know the fabric care instructions of your couch. In case the label is missing, which is mostly the case in Indian manufactured furniture, call a professional sofa cleaner to work on it first. During the visit, you can ask them about the care required for your sofa. This will help you maintain your couch hygiene until his next visit.

Mostly all fabric sofas can be cleaned by water, and if it is so in your case, run a spot test of the below solutions on the part of the upholstery that is not visible- like the back of the sofa.  This way you will be sure what works on your fabric.

Treat the stains right

If there is a stain that is stale, chances are that it has already set into the fabric. Use a steamer or a steam iron and hit the spot directly. The steam will help loosen the stain and make it easier to remove. Next, make a solution of dish soap and water and blot the stain with the mixture. Remove the soapy mixture by blotting a clean sponge soaked in plain water and then tap dry with a clean dry towel. If the stain is still persistent, try using vinegar or vodka to blot the stain. Rinse and repeat this step until the stain has completely disappeared. Now just switch on the fan and enjoy staring at your spotless couch as it slowly dries off.

In case the stains have survived the above steps then it’s clear that you’re dealing with stubborn ones. In such cases, its best advised to hire a couch cleaning service, as their special stain dissolvent work wonders even on the most stubborn blotches.

While a lot of us clean our sofas only during Diwali, its advisable to get it professionally dry-cleaned once between 3-6 months and clean it at home once every month. This will ensure your couch is hygienic and stain-free through the year.
